A new book to inspire Biblical leadership across Africa has been launched at the opening night of the ABLI Forum.
The book, Culture, Scripture and Leadership in Africa, was edited by the Bible Society’s International Advocacy Officer, Dr Mohammed Girma.
‘It brings together experienced experts, young aspiring leaders and, most importantly, abundantly talented women in a place of honest conversation,’ said Dr Girma.
Pass on power
The book uses contributors from across Africa, and addresses topics ranging from women in leadership to the continent’s tragic reluctance to pass on power to emerging leaders. This ‘endemic failure’ has resulted in ‘aborted dreams and unrealised potential,’ argued Dr Girma.
His book celebrates African culture, but calls for that culture to be submitted to the Word of God.
‘We honour our culture,’ said Dr Girma, ‘but we honour the Bible – the living word of God – more. This book is a small step towards putting culture and scripture in dialogue to foster Biblical leadership.’
Calls to action
Among the calls to action is a cry for mentors to come forward to train up the next generation of young leaders. Another chapter, The Bold and the Brave, argues for recognition that women can and must be empowered to contribute to the development of society.
The book also challenges young businessmen and women to soar in their ambitions, but to always remember that the Biblical business is not about self-enrichment but service to the community.
The book also carries a reminder that the Church must lead by example.
Dr Girma told delegates at ABLI that the Forum is no longer just an event: ‘ABLI has become a movement that will enable people to find the inspiration they need to embark on action. Our hope is that this book captures the spirit and ethos of ABLI to enable us to work together to transform African culture.’
